5 Smart Tips for Maximum Broadband Speeds

Posted on July 19, 2025

Understanding the Importance of a Reliable Broadband Connection

In the United States, a stable and fast broadband connection is crucial for various daily activities, ranging from remote work to online gaming. However, achieving the best possible download speeds can sometimes be tricky, even when everything seems to be in order. Fortunately, there are simple steps you can take to enhance your internet performance.

Tips to Maximize Your Broadband Speeds

One of the first things to consider is the placement of your modem. If your downloads are consistently slow, it may be due to the location of your router. If it’s hidden in a closet, behind the TV, or under the stairs, it might be time to move it. For optimal signal strength, place the router in an open area, ideally in the center of your home. Elevating it off the ground can also help improve coverage.

Avoid placing the router near devices that emit their own signals, such as baby monitors or cordless phones. These gadgets can interfere with Wi-Fi signals and cause slowdowns.

Avoiding the Window Area

While it’s important to keep the router out in the open, placing it on a windowsill is not recommended. Proximity to glass can cause some of the router’s signal to escape outside instead of reflecting back into the room. Additionally, heat can negatively affect routers, as they tend to overheat in high temperatures. Overheating can lead to slower performance or even complete shutdowns.

If your router is located on a window ledge, consider moving it to a more suitable spot.

Keeping the Router Away from the Kitchen

The kitchen is generally not an ideal location for your router. This is because there are many metal objects in the kitchen that can interfere with Wi-Fi signals. Microwaves, for instance, operate on the same 2.4 GHz frequency as most Wi-Fi routers, which can cause disruptions and even result in losing your internet connection entirely.

Considering the Impact of Pets and Aquatic Life

Although your cat or dog is unlikely to affect your download speeds, having fish in an aquarium nearby could be a different story. Wi-Fi signals have difficulty passing through water, so if your router is close to a large fish tank, it might be causing lag during streaming sessions. To improve your speed, ensure the router is kept away from any aquatic life.

The Benefits of a Full Reboot

Sometimes, simply rebooting your Wi-Fi router can make a significant difference. The classic method of turning it off and then back on again can fix issues, eliminate bugs, and restore your internet speed. Most Internet Service Providers (ISPs) recommend turning off the router, waiting for one minute, and then turning it back on.

Keep in mind that a full reboot can take up to five minutes to complete, so it’s best to avoid doing this right before an important Zoom call. While restarting your router can be beneficial, it’s not advisable to turn it off overnight. This could prevent your router from receiving important updates. Frequent power cycling might also signal to your ISP that there is an issue with your connection, potentially leading to emergency speed restrictions that could slow down your internet.
