Key Breakthrough Could Revolutionize Electric Vehicle Safety

Posted on July 19, 2025

Innovations in Electric Vehicle Safety

A global chemicals company named Huntsman has introduced a new polyurethane coating system designed specifically for electric vehicle (EV) batteries. This innovation, launched in June, aims to address a critical issue known as “thermal runaway.” According to the International Council on Clean Transportation, thermal runaway is a chemical process that occurs when a cell within a battery pack experiences a short circuit. This leads to excessive heat generation, which can trigger a chain reaction resulting in fires.

Huntsman’s Polyresyst EV5005 is a coating that can be applied to both metals and composites used in battery systems. The International Fire and Safety Journal highlights the potential of this product in enhancing the safety of EVs. In a press release, Irina Bolshakova, the global automotive marketing director at Huntsman, emphasized the importance of preventing thermal runaway in the automotive industry. She stated that manufacturers are seeking materials that allow them to incorporate additional fire resistance into battery enclosures without increasing weight or complexity in vehicle design and manufacturing.

The Polyresyst EV5005 system was unveiled at the Battery Show Europe in Stuttgart, Germany, alongside other similar systems tailored for EV batteries. This innovative coating offers a lightweight solution that acts as an extra layer of protection against thermal runaway. By reducing risks associated with EV batteries, companies like Huntsman play a crucial role in making electric vehicles more widely adopted.

Electric vehicles have seen a significant rise in popularity over the past few years. According to Our World in Data, approximately one out of every five new cars sold globally is an electric vehicle. Despite this growth, several myths persist regarding their efficiency in cold weather and concerns about fire safety, which often deter potential buyers.

It is important to note that while these concerns are common, they are not entirely justified. As reported by Autocar, Sweden’s Authority for Social Protection and Preparedness found that only 0.4% of the country’s average annual vehicle fires involve EVs, with an additional 1.5% involving hybrids. This data suggests that the risk of fires in electric vehicles is relatively low compared to traditional internal combustion vehicles.

In addition to improved safety, electric cars offer significant cost savings over time. Their reduced fuel costs make them an attractive option for drivers looking to save money. Moreover, electric vehicles are better for the environment since they do not emit toxic fumes, unlike standard combustion vehicles that rely on fossil fuels, which contribute to air pollution and can exacerbate respiratory issues.

Huntsman’s latest innovation could help alleviate some of the lingering concerns that may still be hindering the adoption of electric vehicles. For those interested in transitioning to EVs, home solar energy can further reduce charging costs, whether through leasing or purchasing.
