Machine Learning Unearths 10x More Yellowstone Earthquake Data

Posted on July 19, 2025

Understanding Yellowstone’s Seismic Activity

The Yellowstone Caldera, located across Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana, is one of the most seismically active volcanic regions on the planet. A caldera forms when a volcano erupts, emptying its magma chamber and causing the land above to collapse into a large depression. This geological feature has long fascinated scientists due to its potential for significant seismic and volcanic activity.

In a recent breakthrough study, Professor Bing Li from Western University in Canada led a team that collaborated with researchers from Universidad Industrial de Santander in Colombia and the United States Geological Survey. Using machine learning techniques, they analyzed 15 years of historical earthquake data from Yellowstone. Their innovative methods identified and assigned magnitudes to approximately ten times more seismic events than had been previously documented. This discovery offers new insights into the ongoing dynamics beneath the Yellowstone Caldera and enhances the ability to assess potential volcanic risks.

Earthquake Swarms in Yellowstone

One of the key findings of the study is that over half of the earthquakes recorded in Yellowstone occur as part of earthquake swarms. These are clusters of small, linked tremors that move and evolve within a confined area over short periods. The enhanced catalog of seismic activity now includes 86,276 events from 2008 to 2022, providing a much clearer picture of the region’s volcanic and seismic behavior.

Professor Li explains that earthquake swarms differ from aftershocks. While aftershocks are sequences of smaller tremors following a single larger event, swarms consist of interconnected earthquakes occurring over a short period and within a specific area. Although each volcano has unique characteristics, the patterns observed in these swarms offer valuable insights into the complex underground systems at play.

Implications for Safety and Energy Development

Understanding these seismic patterns can help improve safety protocols, provide clearer risk information to the public, and guide the development of geothermal energy by avoiding hazardous zones with high heat flow. This knowledge is crucial for communities living near or visiting the Yellowstone region, as well as for industries seeking to harness the area’s natural resources.

The Role of AI in Seismic Analysis

Before the use of machine learning, experts had to manually inspect earthquake data, which was time-consuming, costly, and often missed many smaller events. Today, machine learning allows scientists to analyze vast quantities of historical seismic data stored in databases worldwide. This approach is uncovering many more earthquakes and helping researchers better understand both well-known and hidden seismic regions globally.

Professor Li emphasizes that manually analyzing such large volumes of seismic data is not feasible or scalable. The new study also reveals that earthquake swarms beneath the Yellowstone Caldera occur along relatively young, rough fault structures, which differ from the more developed, smoother faults found in areas like southern California and regions just outside the caldera. This distinction helps scientists better understand the unique seismic behavior of the area.

Advancing Scientific Research

With a detailed and reliable catalog of seismic activity beneath the Yellowstone Caldera, researchers can now apply advanced statistical methods to identify and examine previously undetected earthquake swarms. This deeper understanding will contribute to future studies and improve our ability to predict and respond to seismic events in this dynamic region.

The study has been published in the journal Science Advances, marking a significant step forward in the field of volcanology and seismology.
