Refurbished vs. Used iPhones: Key Differences Explained

Posted on July 19, 2025

Understanding the Cost of Apple Products

Apple products are known for their premium pricing, and the iPhone 16 series is no exception. The standard iPhone 16 starts at $799, while the iPhone 16 Plus is priced at $899. For those looking for a more premium experience, the iPhone 16 Pro begins at $999, and the iPhone 16 Pro Max is available for $1199. Even the budget-friendly option, the iPhone 16e, comes in at $599, which is only $200 less than the standard model. However, this device lacks the Camera Control button and doesn’t feel like a true iPhone 16, giving it a more outdated appearance.

For those who want to avoid spending nearly a thousand dollars on a flagship model but also don’t want to settle for a budget device that feels like a relic, there are two practical alternatives: purchasing a used iPhone or opting for a refurbished one. While they may seem similar at first glance, there are key differences between the two options.

What Is a Used iPhone?

A used iPhone is exactly what it sounds like—an iPhone that has been previously owned and used by someone else. In most cases, these devices still function as expected, but they typically do not come in perfect condition or with a 100% battery health. There are instances where a used iPhone might be in excellent shape, such as when the previous owner upgraded quickly or sold it before any issues arose. However, the overall condition of a used iPhone depends largely on the seller.

When purchasing from someone you know, you can usually assess the phone’s condition beforehand and have a direct line of communication if any problems arise. However, buying from strangers or online listings can be riskier. Without a way to verify the phone’s history or check its functionality, you may face unexpected issues once the device is in your hands. Additionally, there’s no guarantee about the quality of repairs, if any were done. For example, a cracked screen might have been replaced with a third-party part instead of an original Apple component, which could affect performance.

Refurbished iPhones: A More Reliable Option

Refurbished iPhones are also technically used devices, but they undergo a more thorough process. These phones are professionally inspected, tested, and repaired to ensure they meet specific quality standards. One of the best ways to purchase a refurbished iPhone is through Apple’s Certified Refurbished program, where you can save up to 15% on the original price.

When you buy a refurbished iPhone directly from Apple, you receive a brand-new battery, a new outer shell, and a one-year limited warranty. Additionally, all refurbished Apple products are eligible for AppleCare, allowing you to extend coverage just like with a brand-new device. If you’re not satisfied with the product, Apple offers free delivery and returns.

Apple claims that all its refurbished devices go through full functional testing and are repaired using genuine Apple parts. They are also thoroughly cleaned and repackaged in a brand-new white box with all necessary accessories included. While a used iPhone may cost less, the added benefits of a refurbished device provide peace of mind. If you prefer not to buy directly from Apple, you can find refurbished iPhones through third-party retailers like Best Buy, Amazon, Walmart, or Back Market. However, these options may not offer the same guarantees, such as AppleCare coverage.

Choosing the Right Option

If you’re cautious about purchasing second-hand tech but still want to save money, a refurbished iPhone is likely the best choice. It offers a balance between affordability and reliability. On the other hand, if you’re willing to take on some risk and are comfortable with potential imperfections, a used iPhone could be a viable option. Ultimately, the decision depends on your personal preferences and how much you value certainty when purchasing a device.
