St. John’s Boutique Closet Offers Hope to Foster Care Clients

Posted on July 19, 2025

A New Space for Dignity and Support

Inside the newly opened facility of D.A. Blodgett – St. John’s, a small but impactful room is already making a significant difference for the organization’s clients. This space, known as the Care Closet, is more than just a modest area filled with clothing and supplies. It represents a powerful commitment to providing dignity, comfort, and support to those in need.

The Care Closet is designed to offer more than just physical necessities. While it does provide essential items such as clothing, hygiene products, and other daily essentials, its true purpose goes beyond that. It serves as a place where individuals can feel respected, valued, and empowered. For many, especially children in foster care, these simple gestures can make a world of difference in their sense of self-worth and security.

“We are standing in a brand new building. It’s only two years old,” said Caitlin Hopkins, Director of Corporate Relations and Events. “One resource we really missed from our previous location on Leonard was the resource room. It was in the basement — simple, but it provided clothing and essentials to children in foster care. Without it for two years, we felt that absence deeply.”

This sentiment highlights the importance of the Care Closet not just as a functional space, but as an emotional and psychological lifeline for the community it serves. The previous location had a resource room that played a crucial role in supporting children who were in the foster care system. When that space was no longer available, the impact was felt across the organization and the families they served.

The new Care Closet has been designed with the same mission in mind: to ensure that every individual who walks through its doors feels cared for and supported. The space is thoughtfully arranged to make it easy for clients to find what they need while maintaining a sense of privacy and respect. It reflects the values of the organization and the deep commitment to serving the community with compassion and integrity.

Why the Care Closet Matters

There are several reasons why the Care Closet is so important:

  • Dignity and Respect: The Care Closet ensures that individuals receive essential items in a way that upholds their dignity.
  • Support for Vulnerable Populations: Children in foster care often face challenges related to stability and self-esteem. The Care Closet helps address some of these issues by providing necessary resources.
  • Community Impact: By offering a space that meets real needs, the Care Closet strengthens the overall well-being of the community.
  • Emotional Well-Being: Access to basic necessities can have a profound effect on mental health and emotional resilience.

The Care Closet is not just about giving out items; it’s about creating a safe and welcoming environment where people can feel seen, heard, and supported. It’s a reflection of the broader mission of D.A. Blodgett – St. John’s, which is to empower individuals and families through meaningful services and programs.

As the organization continues to grow and evolve, the Care Closet stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful design and compassionate service. It is a reminder that even small spaces can have a big impact when built with purpose and heart.
