A New Chapter in Warframe’s Epic Storyline
Warframe has recently delivered a series of updates that have taken players on a narrative journey through time and space, weaving together elements from the year 1999 and the fairytale void-dimension known as Duviri. Central to these developments is the looming threat of the Indifference, an Eldritch force that seeks to break free from its confines and enter our reality. As this danger grows closer, the Tenno must navigate their lost memories, uncovering forgotten allies, a failed peace, and a path leading to a distant star system.
The latest expansion, The Old Peace, offers a glimpse into the star system of Tau, introduces a new frame closely following Oraxia, and expands players’ arsenals with a familiar Prime Warframe and new Operator abilities. At this year’s TennoCon convention, Digital Extremes outlined what fans can expect in the coming year, including the next expansion and plans for future content.
What is Tau?
For Warframe lore enthusiasts, the chance to finally see the long-anticipated star system of Tau is a monumental moment. This is the location where the Orokin Empire created the Sentients to colonize. It was also the destination of the Zariman Ten Zero before its accident led to the creation of the Tenno, the void-powered player characters. The current struggles among major factions are partly driven by a greedy superpower seeking control over Tau’s resources, making it one of the most significant locations in the Warframe universe.
Although players won’t be able to fully explore Tau until 2026, the upcoming expansion will take them to a single planetary moon, allowing them to delve into the past and uncover hidden truths that will prepare them for the war against the Indifference.
The Old Peace Expansion
The Old Peace is set to be another time-bending adventure, where the Tenno use unique void powers and sensory deprivation tanks to explore repressed memories. While the new narrative doesn’t necessarily change existing knowledge about the old war between the Orokin and the Sentients, it challenges how much we truly know about that era. The Tenno, Orokin, and Sentients all once reached Tau and established a fragile peace, which includes discovering a forgotten childhood friend, a Sentient named Adis.
This expansion promises to be a tragic tale, as history inevitably leads to bloodshed. Even if the Tenno try to maintain peace by eliminating Orokin Dax warriors breaking the agreement, conflict is unavoidable. Players will uncover hidden truths on the moon of Perita, which will help them prepare for the approaching war.
The Devil’s Triad: A New Set of Characters
The Old Peace introduces the Devil’s Triad, a group of Orokin enforcers who embody religious zealotry. These characters, including Father Lyon Allard and Marie Leroux, are new protoframe variants of Harrow and Wisp, expanding on the concept introduced with the Drifter’s Hex allies. One of them, however, has been fully consumed by the Infestation’s steelskin, becoming the next Warframe: The devil Uriel.
These characters align with the darker tone of The Old Peace, featuring visuals reminiscent of the Warhammer Inquisitors. They fit well within the lore of Harrow, Rell’s Warframe protector in the Red Veil faction.
Caliban Prime and Focus System Upgrades
As players explore the past, they will encounter ancient Tenno powers being reborn. A temporary alliance with the Sentients created hybrid technologies lost to time, now available for players to reclaim. The next Warframe to receive the Prime treatment is Caliban, which fits perfectly into the lore of the upcoming expansion. Prime Warframes are more powerful versions of biomechanical suits from the Orokin Empire’s heyday, and Caliban is a fusion of Infestation and Sentient technology.
Caliban Prime is the product of the old peace, and the recently reworked ally-summoning frame will soon shine in players’ arsenals. Additionally, the focus system will see upgrades, allowing players invested in the five core focus schools to wield powerful ultimate abilities.
Other Announcements from TennoCon
Other major announcements from TennoCon include a long-awaited rework of the Oberon Warframe, a new mod-related story quest for new players, and special skins for Valkyr and Lavos. The Old Peace expansion will launch later in 2025, with ongoing content updates to follow. Tau is set to become the central story driver for Warframe next year, making this expansion essential for players to understand post-release.
