The Last Attack and the New Journey
In November 2024, a major cinematic release titled The Last Attack hit theaters across Japan, bringing an end to the epic saga of Attack on Titan. While the franchise continues to thrive through various collaborations, merchandise, and video games, its creator, Hajime Isayama, has taken a step back from his work. He mentioned feeling burnt out after completing the series, but this didn’t stop him from exploring new creative avenues.
In February 2025, Isayama partnered with voice actor Yuki Kaji to create a new manga titled Theory of a Malicious Man and AI – I’m an AI Who Gained Self-Awareness, Is Exploited by a Black Company, Becomes a V-Tuber as a Joke, Goes Viral Which Risks Humanity’s Extinction! But Well, I’m Just an AI, So What Do I Care! This project, abbreviated as Soyogi Fractal, was conceptualized by Kaji, illustrated by Kai Noshigami, and featured Isayama’s story and initial artwork. This collaboration marks a significant shift in his creative direction.
During an interview with the New York Times, Isayama shared that he has ideas for a new manga and is considering a dark comedy genre. This raises intriguing questions about what kind of story he might tell next.
The Original Idea: Dark Comedy or Heartbreak?
Before the conclusion of Attack on Titan, Isayama was asked about future projects. He revealed that he had an idea since high school, which he hoped to bring to life. Although not the same as his current plans, he mentioned a potential dark comedy as a possible next project. This could be a fusion of his old concept and his new interests.
Looking at his previous works, such as orz, which follows Yasuhiko, a high school student who leads a double life as a superhero fighting monsters from another universe, there are clear themes of duality and conflict. In orz, a watch controls Yasu’s stress levels, triggering a transformation when they get too high. When his childhood friend Aki transfers to his school, he faces the challenge of protecting her while keeping his secret from his friends. The one-shot ends with a battle against enemies, highlighting the grim realities of the world.
There is also a mention of another one-shot called Heartbreak One, inspired by Ace Combat 5 and featuring a cyborg character based on the original design of Historia. While details are scarce, it suggests that Isayama still has many stories to tell.
A Side Story or a Snippet?
Isayama has also discussed the possibility of a one-shot based on The Great Titan War, which takes place 100 years before the main events of Attack on Titan. However, this idea was abandoned when he decided to focus more on Levi’s character and his unique traits, such as how he holds his teacup. In the same interview, he again mentioned feelings of burnout, indicating that smaller stories may be more feasible for him at this time.
His passion for the series remains evident, but he acknowledges the need for rest and self-care to avoid further exhaustion. This balance between creativity and well-being is crucial for any artist.
Future Possibilities
Other works like Before the Fall and Harsh Mistress of the City could potentially be adapted into new stories. However, the direction of Isayama’s career will ultimately depend on his personal choices and creative impulses. Whether he continues with dark comedies, explores new genres, or returns to the world of Attack on Titan, his journey as an artist remains fascinating and full of potential.
