Schools Ordered to Verify AED Accessibility and Registration

Posted on July 19, 2025

Urgent Call for Schools to Register Defibrillators

Schools across the region are being encouraged to ensure their defibrillators are properly registered and accessible. This initiative is part of a broader effort by the South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS) to support a national campaign aimed at making life-saving devices more readily available during emergencies.

The Circuit, a UK-wide network of defibrillators, plays a crucial role in helping emergency services locate the nearest device during a cardiac arrest. By registering defibrillators on this platform, schools can significantly improve response times and potentially save lives.

Over 16,000 schools have already taken this step, but there is still work to be done. While some defibrillators are available around the clock, others are only accessible during specific hours when the school is open. This variability highlights the importance of clear communication and accurate registration.

Why Registration Matters

David Hamer, operations manager at SCAS, emphasized the critical nature of this task. He stated, “It’s absolutely vital that every defibrillator is registered on The Circuit. When someone suffers a cardiac arrest, every second counts, and having accurate, up-to-date information allows emergency services to direct bystanders to the nearest available defib without delay.”

Hamer also urged schools and other organizations to check whether their defibrillators are registered, accessible, and ready for use. This is especially important ahead of the summer break, as changes in school schedules may affect access to these life-saving devices.

In the South Central region, over 7,600 defibrillators are currently registered on The Circuit. In 2025 alone, these devices have been deployed 279 times, underscoring their importance in emergency situations.

How to Check and Register

Schools and organizations can easily check their registration status using the Defib Finder website. This tool provides real-time information about the location and availability of defibrillators across the country.

Registration can be completed online through The Circuit website. The process is straightforward and ensures that each device is properly documented and accessible to emergency responders when needed.

Key Steps for Schools

  • Verify Registration: Use the Defib Finder website to confirm if your school’s defibrillator is listed.
  • Check Accessibility: Ensure the device is available during all necessary hours, including after-school hours and weekends if applicable.
  • Update Information: If there are any changes to the location or availability of the defibrillator, update the details on The Circuit promptly.
  • Train Staff: Make sure that staff members know where the defibrillator is located and how to use it in an emergency.

By taking these steps, schools can play a vital role in improving public safety and ensuring that life-saving equipment is always within reach. The collaboration between emergency services, schools, and the community is essential in creating a safer environment for everyone.
